A-Rod needs to make a move because he will always be second fiddle to DJ. The best place for him to be is in South Florida, and here's why:
* A-Rod already made it in Miami. A-Rod went to the University of Miami and is one of the greats ever to come out of that baseball program (maybe the only great sports program they have left - they should look into getting a boxing team).
* A deal is do-able. The
Marlins have really the only thing that the
Yankees lacked this year - quality starting pitching. Put Dontrelle Willis in the Yankee rotation, you have a great left-handed starter in the Bronx. Texas already carries a load of A-Rod's salary. The
Yankees could carry some more salary in a deal that would send Dontrelle and some good young role players and to the Bronx. The
Marlins could get back what they want - A-Rod, a bag of cash and whatever is left in the
Yankees farm, system. And Cashman has the perfect name to bring the bag of loot down here. He can be the Johnny Ola to Steinbrenner's Hyman Roth. God knows he needs to pay Cashman to do something. The Pittsburgh
Pirates had a better pitching staff in RBI Baseball than the one he put together.
* A-Rod is wasting his marketability in New York. From a sport-economic perspective, A-Rod is probably the most marketable American and Latin player in the game. This means he has access to two markets. The best city for him to be in from an endorsements-earning perspective is Miami. He can not only cater to the traditional American audience and the growing Latino audience in America, but from Miami, and only from Miami, can he begin to be a force in the Latin Caribbean. There are only three teams that can be see all throughout the Caribbean- the
Yankees and the YES network, the
Mets and SNY, and the
Marlins. A-Rod needs out of the Bronx, and the
Mets are pretty much shored up at 3rd base for the next 10 years. That leaves only Miami, where A-Rod could be a God. Let the SOB sell a few empanadas. It might be good for him.
*There is less pressure in South Florida. In fact, the hardest thing to decide in Miami is whether to drink a Presidente or a Mojito. It's the God's honest truth that A-Rod cannot handle the NY media microscope as well as he can handle the much more laid back atmosphere of other cities. In Miami, he can flourish.
*A-Rod cannot build a legacy in New York. Even if A-Rod stays and the
Yankees win a ring next year, it will be A-Rod's 1st but Derek Jeter's 5th! You can't compete with that. It killed Lou Gehrig- they had to name a disease after him.
* And most importantly, THE
YANKEES SUCK. No one except truly sick and depraved individuals watches Star Wars and wants the Ewoks to get light sabres shoved where the sun doesn't shine, and yet I have Yankee fans comparing their current team to Murderer's Row after they sweep the Kansas City
Royals. Frankly speaking, I would not shed a tear if the whole of the South Bronx sank into the ocean. In fact, I have full sweat-shops of Guatamalan and Indonesian children saying novenas to that end (it doesn't hurt to have God on your side). But really, A-Rod should get out of New York before the house that Ruth built goes up in flames.
