This is one damn horse, you'd think that of all people, Peta, would know that at least 2 or 1.7 per 1000 starts are killed daily....How many jockies have gone on trial?

heres my thing about this..people make a big deal about dog fighting in this country...but not this..this is just a sport to gamble on like dog fighting..but yet dog fighting is illegal..the horses life are always at risk of injury and death bc of injury.they get whipped and choked and trained to do something they may not be borned to do..im not saying horse racing should be banned but they should look at dog fighting compared to this
5/5/2008 2:54 PM ET
Good point PJ...
5/5/2008 3:22 PM ET
Dog Fighting and Horse Racing do not belong in the same breath
5/5/2008 3:53 PM ET
Well Rose it is kinda true. Why is dog fighting illegal? Because its cruel and dangerous to the life and well being of the dog. Horse racing, like PJ says, whipped and choked, and can possibly break their legs, which is fatal in most cases.
5/5/2008 6:01 PM ET
ehhh I have some numbers for you PHX and you tell me if it's the same. 1 out of 1000 starts produces a dead horse or .001% while dog fighting produces a whopping 50-100% mortality rate (depending on if the winner also dies) Whipped and choked? It only lasts for a couple of minutes and some humans like that anyway

5/5/2008 7:40 PM ET

rose u said it some "humans like it" they are not humans..dogs and horses are not humans..all im saying if it wasnt for the gambling, there would be no horse racing..heres a stat for you rose..4 deaths in the last 8 breeder cup races.thats 50% death ratio in events..thats kind of high..and the horses may be injured before they even race..the US is the only country where you can give the horse a pain killer so they would never feel pain or uncomfortable if they had any injuries..so HORSE RACING NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT..in my opinion its in the same breath of dog fighting.because the owners pay millions for these horses and dogs and they get their lives risked..while in the end if they are no use to them nemore they kill them..if a horse is no longer able to race, they kill them..take there seamen and kill them..now you tell me how thats no different from what michael vick did?
5/5/2008 7:55 PM ET

First of all I was kidding about the human thing... Michael Vick electrocuted, drowned, and shot dogs, I call that a substantial difference my friend
5/5/2008 8:21 PM ET
whats the difference..they are still killing the animals..it doesnt matter how you kill them..you are still killing them..if you kill a human..no matter which way you kill a human..it is murder..killing something is still killing something no matter how you kill it..as long as it ends in death its not right..and its only because they can not make the owners money nemore...so they say kill them..wth is that about..that would be like to a human..or your no good at ya job..kill them..there is no difference..thats facts..
5/5/2008 8:29 PM ET

"the only difference in dog fighting and horse racing is this:The main difference I see is socio-economic. The dogfighting crowd is seen as low life, while the horse racing crowd, especially at the Kentucky Derby, considered the best and brightest of high society. The only real difference I see between horse racing and dog fighting is that horse racing has the support of the rich and famous, even though the mentality of it is no better than that of a dog fight in the ghetto. I'm sorry, but I see no real difference in humans making dogs fight, and a human on the back of a horse, hitting the horse with a whip, to make it run faster than another horse.
People may want to sugar coat horse racing by saying how great the horses are treated. But whatever pampered life the horse may enjoy before a race. It seems to end once a jockey with a whip is mounted on its back, and it is forced to run. "-

"1 out of 1000 starts produces a dead horse or .001%" does'nt seem like much until someone points out that, There are over 3,000 starts a day around the globe....Now that ".001%" is equal to 3 horses a day, you're gonna have to come with something else.....
5/6/2008 8:41 AM ET
3 Horses die a day? Seriously? If you guys care so much about animals and animal cruelty, why don't you have anything to say about the 130,000 cattle, 7,000 calves, 360,000 pigs, and 24 million chickens that are slaughtered every day? You guys sound like a bunch of PETA tree huggers. If you want to waste your time crying about 3 horses a day, that's cool, just know there's a lot worse animal cruelty situations you "advocates" should be concerned about. PJ put down your hamburger.
5/7/2008 3:17 PM ET
Because I like hamburgers, bacon, and fried chicken...I don't know about you but I've never tried dog or horse burgers, besides you're the one trying to say that there's a difference between horses and dogs being killed for sport....No wait..you're saying because there aren't enough dead horses then it isn't as bad, okay I see...
5/8/2008 12:28 PM ET
I knew you would start to understand Gayhem
5/8/2008 7:18 PM ET
With a name like ROSE, I wouldn't call anyone here at FTF gay, besides you're probably that human who likes the whipping and choking...must be somebodies bitch...at home, wearing your leather gimp suit, waiting on 5 foot of broom stick that you're more then happy to take....In either end.
5/9/2008 5:39 PM ET
Gee, why arent we talking about other "animal cruelty"? Common sense you idiot, look at the headline. Its about Horse racing, not cattle being killed.
5/9/2008 6:04 PM ET
everybody in here eats hamburgers and chicken and pigs well alot of animals is that animal cruelty stop fighting over this nonsense get back to the real sports
5/11/2008 5:38 PM ET
Yes we eat hamburgers. But we dont kill them for entertainment. And we dont practically torture them alive.
5/11/2008 8:39 PM ET
am a big fan of racing and really saw no foul with the jockey i think this is a great sport some of you don not but its your rigth not to like it. i really dont see it as animal cruelty as for peta they cry over very thing.
