2010 Detroit Lions Football Preview

What to say about the Detroit Lions, they have struggled for many seasons to try to find a formula to be a winning team. Last season marked the first season that Matthew Stafford the highly touted quarterback from the University of Georgia and he did well (all things considering).

NFL Betting: Detroit Lions Week 1 Pick

2-14 last year, 0-16 the year before; there’s only one way for the Detroit Lions to go…right? One of the NFL’s most maligned teams, the Lions haven’t really had anything to cheer about since, well, the last time they made the playoffs, which was in 1999 (Sportsbook had them as a 7-point dog in that Wild-Card game, which they lost 27-13 to the Washington Redskins). Will the Lions be Kings of the Jungle again? Let’s say that’s highly unlikely this year and the current NFL Future odds posted at online sportsbooks are evidence of that. They are longshots to take the NFC North division, currently listed at +1400, longer shots of course to win the NFC championship (+5000) and off the charts when it comes to the Super Bowl (+20,000). Brian Taylor, sportsbook manager at SPORTSBETTING.com, said of the early betting volume on the NFC North, they actually do have some clients who are taking a chance on Detroit in 2010. Of all the betting action on the future bet “To win the NFC” 9% of the money is on the Lions at +1400 (a $100 wager pays $1,400 if they win). It might be a little optimistic and a year or two early, but remember the Dallas Cowboys were in rough shape before Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin came together to lead them. And it took Tom Brady supplanting Drew Bledsoe for the Patriots to really emerge as a consistent championship caliber team. But do the Lions have a QB that can step forward and turn this franchise around? I think they do. Matt Stafford had a very good rookie season…as good as Mark Sanchez, despite the numbers and Sanchez’s playoff performance. In 10 starts in his rookie campaign, Stafford threw for 2,267 yards and 13 TDs but also was intercepted 20 times as well – not the prettiest of stats but then again, look at the team in front of him. The Lions had the worst defense in the league, in terms of yards allowed, as opposing teams amassed 6,274 yards against Detroit’s defense. To that end, the Lions selected DT Ndamukong Suh in the first-round of this year’s draft. If the Detroit Lions are to really make a push for the postseason though, they are going to have to improve their record against divisional opponents. The Lions have lost 15-consecutive games to fellow NFC North teams, 0-15 straight up (SU), and have gone 4-10-1 against the spread (ATS) at the same time. They can start to turn the tide Week 1, when they’ll open the regular season in Chicago against the Bears. SPORTSBETTING.com has the lines up for Week 1 games and the Lions are currently listed as 7-point underdogs. Looking at the numbers, Detroit is only 3-8 SU in their last 11 overall against the Bears and they aren’t much better against the spread at 4-7 ATS. In their last 20 when listed as underdogs of 8-points or less, they are only 4-16 SU and 5-15 ATS. That said, I like the Lions plus the points in the opener. I expect them to take a big step forward in 2010, winning six or seven games, maybe more.

NCAA Football Odds: Big Change for Big Ten

Nebraska Cornhuskers Join the Big Ten It was a good news bad news scenario for the Big 12. Good news: the Texas Longhorns aren’t going anywhere. The bad news: see ya later Nebraska (and Colorado too). The ‘Huskers are headed to the Big Ten, while the Colorado Buffaloes are pulling up stakes for the Pac-10. Nebraska still has another year facing the likes of the Longhorns, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma Sooners but come next summer, online sportsbooks will be putting up NCAA Football future odds on Nebraska vs. the likes of the Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions. J.B. Milliken, the University of Nebraska’s president, thought it was prudent to join the Big Ten. “The University of Nebraska would have new opportunities with membership in the Big Ten – and I believe the Big Ten would be a stronger conference as well,” he said in an AP report. Based on the numbers, the Cornhuskers could be making a good move. Since Sept. of 1995, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have faced Big Ten competition nine times, going 8-1 straight up and 6-3 against the spread. With only nine games in the last 15 years, obviously the ‘Huskers haven’t faced all 11 teams in the Big Ten – yes, there are 11 teams despite the name of the conference – but here is how they’ve fared against the ones they have played. They’ve played the Iowa Hawkeyes twice in the past 15 years, once in 1999 and once in 2000 and they hammered them both times. In both of those games they were huge favorites, covering in ’99 and failing to cover in 2000. The ‘Huskers last played the Michigan Wolverines back in Dec. of 2005 at the Alamo Bowl and it was a 32-28 thriller in favor of Nebraska. For sports bettors who remember that game, you might recall the ‘Huskers covered as 10-point underdogs. Based on history, the Cornhuskers should feast on the other school from the state of Michigan. In three meetings against the Michigan State Spartans since 1995, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have gone 3-0 both straight up and ATS. Will that dominance continue when the ‘Huskers face the Spartans regularly starting in 2011? The last meeting between the Northwestern Wildcats is a game that the Nebraska Cornhuskers like to reminisce about. It was the again the Alamo Bowl, this time in 2000, and led by QB Eric Crouch (remember him?) the Cornhuskers hammered Northwestern 66-21, covering the -14.5 points and going Over the 64.5-point Total. Sorry to Big 12 fans, but I think this is a good move for Nebraska. You can check all the current NCAA football Odds

Stafford out; Lions to start Culpepper at BAL

The Lions will start Daunte Culpepper at quarterback against the Ravens in Week 14. Coach Jim Schwartz is smartly giving Matthew Stafford the week off to rest his dislocated non-throwing shoulder. Culpepper did engineer a touchdown drive at the end of last week's loss to Cincinnati, but hasn't played well for the most part in four appearances this season and would be a weak play in two-QB leagues. Report: Kevin Smith considered 'week to week'

A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that the Lions consider Kevin Smith's (shoulder) status "week to week." This doesn't tell us a whole lot, but "week to week" players typically miss at least one game, and the fact that Smith couldn't finish Week 3 isn't a good sign. Expect Maurice Morris to start in Week 4 against Chicago. It's a poor matchup, though, and Morris isn't talented enough to make a big impact.

Just How Bad Are the Cleveland Browns?

Short answer: they’re terrible. But the long answer is more convoluted. Are the Browns merely division cellar-dwelling bad, 3-13 bad, No. 1 overall pick bad, or could they be (shudder) historically bad? All possibilities appear to be in play at this early juncture of the 2009 season.

Don’t Be a Sucker And Pick the Lions This Weekend

The Redskins had a bad week. The fallout has been rough. A rookie linebacker was a dimwit. Jim Zorn may be in trouble. Morale is low. Washington scored just nine points at home last weekend. That said, they still did something the Lions have not done in nearly two years, win.

Coach Kubiak of the Texans says Schaub should be healthy for Texans' season opener

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub isn't expected to play in Friday night's preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a sprained ankle, but he should be ready for the regular-season opener. Schaub sprained his ankle during the second quarter of Houston's 17-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. He returned after the injury but was limping, and Dan Orlovsky replaced him to start the third quarter. Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday he isn't concerned about the possibility that Schaub will miss the Sept. 13 season opener against the New York Jets. "He's very upbeat about it," Kubiak said. "He called me on the way home last night as I was driving home and told me that he'll be fine and ready to go." The Texans are hoping to keep Schaub on the field more this season. He has missed five games in each of his first two seasons in Houston with injuries. The team probably will use Friday's game as a chance to see more from Orlovsky, who played for the Detroit Lions last season. He has been somewhat inconsistent this preseason, but Kubiak said Orlovsky is improving. Orlovsky moved Houston's offense well on his first series against Minnesota before throwing an interception in the red zone. "He's making progress, but he continues to make some of the mistakes that can get you hurt," Kubiak said. "I am impressed with him coming on the field last night to start the second half and taking us right down the field and making a couple of really nice plays. Then you're disappointed on that play he tries to make on the 13-yard line. You just can't do that." Kubiak said playing with the Texans' first-team offense for a quarter Monday should be beneficial for Orlovsky's comfort level if Schaub can't play. Kubiak and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will continue to work with Orlovsky to cut down on his mistakes. While Schaub probably will sit out Friday, the Texans expect quarterback Rex Grossman to return after missing more than two weeks with a hamstring injury. They want to see more from him after his only work this preseason was one pass attempt in Houston's preseason opener. Several other players also were injured against the Vikings, but none of those injuries appear to be serious. Wide receiver Kevin Walter has a hamstring injury, and fullback Vonta Leach and safety Eugene Wilson, who was injured on the illegal crackback block by Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, both have injured knees. All are listed as day-to-day. The Texans released cornerbacks Cletis Gordon and David Pittman, wide receiver Mike Jones and tackle Jason Watkins on Tuesday to get down to the 75-player limit.

Is Stafford Ready?

Stafford seems to be better than most people in the Lions org thought and now it seems he may start over Culpepper, who had the early edge and lost about 20 lbs in the offseason
