Mayhem's Corner Rd. 2...Fight analysis, Debates and more. Step in to the ring where size does'nt matter...
Since I was unable to watch Calzaghe vs. Jones ( which I'll come back to after I've watched it ) and I'm not completely sold on the upcoming DeLaHoya vs. Pacquiao, ( You know, the Mega-Fraud rather then the self-proclaimed Mega-Fight ) Today we'll address, what IMO is the most intriguing fight in the not too distant future, "Sugar" Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito...
First and foremost, the headline that peaked my interest is as follows, "Mosley fires father from corner as he looks to fight with Margarito"...I know, some of you are saying, "Big Deal"..."It's not the first time" but Mosley made some very valid points and has, hinted towards a very smart decision regarding his new trainer....But first lets address the match-up.
After demolishing Miguel Angel Cotto, in impressive fashion, my obvious pick for Margarito's next opponent would have been, former great Oscar DeLaHoya. Instead DLH has decided to shrink down and beat-up on a smaller man, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao ( Hopefully Oscar's bitten off more then he can chew and Pacman will beat him into retirement, but it's highly unlikely ). DeLaHoya still has one of the meanest lefthooks in the sport but Manny's southpaw style may make it a difficult punch to land...
That being said, I truley like the idea of Mosley vs. Margarito and I do keep the age factor in mind. 5 years earlier a prime Mosley would have embarrassed the younger Margarito but it's 5 years later and that could be the deciding factor in this bout. Mosley is a smart fighter and he has the skills to frustrate Margarito. Cotto had 1 game plan if any, punch and get-out. Wrong move when you're dealing with the stalking style of Margarito. You simply can't fight Margs like that, the few solid punches that Cotto landed, before getting back in his bicycle, gave Antonio time to recuperate & jog to him and Cotto really had no defensive answer to the onslaught of punches being delivered by Marg. Mosley on the other hand will look better at 147 than he did at 154 against Mayorga. Mosley has never carried the extra weight well.
The thing that will frustrate Margarito is the fact that Shane can take a punch very well & won't be backing up & running like Cotto did. I think Mosley still has more experience to expose someone so limited like Margarito. If Mosley can keep his stamina up & stay elusive and frustrating to Margarito he has a chance for a decision. We have to remember Shane banged it out with a prime Oscar DeLaHoya who has a bigger 1 punch KO ratio than Margarito & Mosley fights better at 147. The only thing is that Mosley doesn't fight well against taller fighters with a jab but with that being said... Margarito doesn't utilize a jab
Another thing that might give Shane a slight advantage is, if they fight early next year it will be a long lay off for Margarito. He has'nt fought since July. If he has another terribly slow start Shane could take advantage and win a decision. What happened to Margarito the last time he had a long lay off... Paul Williams outboxed and out worked him. Plus, It's gonna take Mosley's stamina and elusiveness to score points on Marg. Mixing up punches-in-bunches, body shots, head shots sticking and moving and most of all tying Marg up disrupting his timing as well as his devestating punches and Mosley has a better chin then most guys in their division, He's not one to be KO'd or bullied in the ring.
Mosley's new trainer...None other then Nazim Richardson. Never heard of him, well...He trains star light-heavyweight Bernard Hopkins, whom Mosley is close to because of their ties to Golden Boy Promotions. Shane went on to say, "I've talked to Richardson on several occasions," Mosley also said. "I know what his style is and he has a pretty good style. He's good during the fight and at solving different styles. I've been in camp when he's been training Bernard, so I've been around him. He knows what he is doing." There's no agruement that Nazim Richardson was key to B-Hops victory over Kelly Pavlik, last month and he may be the key to a Mosley victory, next year...
For me it's till to early to pick one as they have both impressed me over the years but seriously guy, Mayhem's pick: "Sugar" Shane Mosley by SD.... Weight in with your opinion and let's get this argument under way....DING, DING!
Oh Yeah, Shout-out to "Steelcurtain"...The only one who went with Calzaghe, you nailed it again homeboy. I'm impressed...

Yeah Steel, I've Studied the "Science" since I was a kid (Like, a toddler) I come from a family of fighters. My great grandfather boxed as did my grandfather, but I was the black sheep, Tae Kwon Do for me but mentally I have always been 100% boxing. Every Fridaynight, I'd stay at his house for boxing and pizza, Saturday for the cable fights. You know, vintage Tyson or Holyfield fights, before the digital crap.lol My point, you've got to be able to factor in a ton of scenerios and like Ace Rothstein in "Casino" got to includes things like, a fighters lifestyle, Family problems ( all though it's not a factor this time, this is the 2nd split for'em so who cares ) ),conditioning between fights, as well as skill, talent, chin and speed. You evidently know some of this cause you've been dead on and I seen everything you've pointed out and thought, man, it is gonna go either way. Even when I was sure I had it locked.

As of late we have seen the tide turning towards the older fighters like bernard hopkin's stunning victory over Pavlik and I think we will see something like that here. I think Mosley will out box Margarito. I dont think Mosley will knock Antonio out, I mean come on he's 37 years old, but I do think he will win almost every round. As mayhem pointed out above, margarito has not fought in a while and I can see Mosley just handle him in the ring. Steelcurtains pick: Mosley wins by unanimous decision
