The story that I read was based on what Rudi Johnson had told reporters. He also said that after Tatum's agent was contacted about the incident, the empty bags were returned to the practice facility. Rudi's money, credit cards, ID, and clothes were not returned with the bags.

Tatum claims that he was picking up some bags for a fellow player that was also released by the Lions, and accidentally took Rudi's bags. Which still does not explain why the contents of the bags were removed and not returned with the bags.
