NFL eyes Suggs' 'bounty' comments about Steelers
Terrell Suggs' suggestion that the Baltimore Ravens had a "bounty" on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and running back Rashard Mendenhall has gotten the attention of the NFL.
During the "2 Live Stews" syndicated radio show on Oct. 17, when he was asked, "Did you all put a bounty out on that young man [Mendenhall]," Suggs replied, "Definitely. The bounty was out on him and the bounty was out on [Ward] -- we just didn't get him between the whistles."
Also during the interview, Suggs called Ward "a dirty player" and "a cheap-shot artist. ... We got something in store for him."
Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said the league is looking into the comments.
Mike & Mike On The "Bounty"
Terrell Suggs' comment about the Ravens having a "bounty" on Steelers WR Hines Ward and RB Rashard Mendenhall was a hot topic on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike In The Morning" on Thursday.
• Former Ravens coach Brian Billick addresses whether he thinks Ray Lewis and the Ravens were intentionally trying to hurt Rashard Mendenhall, and whether teams really do set "bounties" on players. Listen
• ESPN's Mark Schlereth shares his thoughts on "bounties" in the NFL, and whether Mendenhall was targeted. Listen
• ESPN's Cris Carter calls in to express his thoughts on the NFL "bounty" discussion. Listen
"That 'bounty' notion is completely against the rules," Anderson told ESPN.com. "To the extent that someone is engaged in that activity, we will look into it and address it. Yes, we've seen the comments and we're trying to determine the completeness of the circumstances."
Mende nhallsustained a season-ending shoulder injury during the game on a hit by Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.
Wednesday, Suggs clarified his comments, explaining that the Ravens were merely planning to keep a close eye on Ward, according to The Baltimore Sun.
"There wasn't any bounty," Suggs said, according to the newspaper. "He [the talk show host] asked me if there was a bounty and I just said I'm going to keep a watch on the guy. He [Ward] broke some guy's jaw last week, and he tried to cheap-shot JJ [Jarret Johnson]. He has also cheap-shotted Ed Reed. We're just going to be on alert the next time we play him."

Suggs also on Wednesday clarified comments supporting second-year quarterback Troy Smith as the Ravens' starter rather than rookie Joe Flacco, who currently has the job, according to the Sun.
During his appearance on "2 Live Stews," Suggs said, "Right now, I think [Flacco is] all right. ... But like I said, in the end, Troy should be the starter [because he's] the better man for the job."
Wednesday, Suggs denied saying Smith should start.
"That's not what I said," Suggs explained, according to the Sun. "When he asked me, I said there should be multiple packages. I think both should get a chance to play."
Suggs also said that Flacco and Smith have different strengths -- and that the Ravens should use both to their advantage. |

B-Hop absolutely destroys Pavlick
Kelly was just too slow, Hopkins had his number all night. Even when Pavlick had Hopkins against the ropes in the middle rounds, B-hop punched his way out. Pavlick didnt land one good power puch. B-Hop really impressed me with this win. He was fully energized in the 12th and was even ready to take on Kelly's whole team with a little action at the end. I just think Kelly underestimated this fight, he looked out of shape, he was slow and was dead in the middle rounds where he could have capitalized. B-Hop wins by unanimous decision. Charged and GMen picked it. |

Polamalu says NFL's fines for hits more about money, not player safety
Troy Polamalu is usually soft-spoken off the field, hard-hitting on it. The recent rash of fines leveled at his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates has caused him to take a shot at the NFL, however.
The Steelers safety suggested Wednesday that the NFL is leveling fines for hits more for its own interest than that of the players.
"I think regarding the evolution of football, it's becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch," Polamalu said. "We've really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it's probably all about money. They're not really concerned about safety."
The Steelers have asked the NFL to clarify why Hines Ward, one of the league's best blocking wide receivers, was fined $15,000 the past two games for unnecessary roughness despite not being penalized.
Ward was fined $10,000 following the Steelers' 26-21 win at Jacksonville on Oct. 5, a week after drawing a $5,000 fine for a play in which he stepped over Baltimore cornerback Corey Ivy on Sept. 29. Ward did not draw a penalty on either play.
Troy Polamalu
When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people. Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous.
-- Troy Polamalu
Also following the Jacksonville game, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was fined $20,000 for criticizing referee Brian Winter for calling a roughing-the-passer penalty against him. Two other Steelers also drew fines for that game, safety Ryan Clark $7,500 for unnecessary roughness -- a late hit -- and wide receiver Nate Washington $7,500 for taunting. Among the four players, the one-game fines totaled $45,000.
"It's starting to cost too much money to come to work for these guys," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.
Tomlin said he planned to call the NFL office about the Ward fines, and team chairman Dan Rooney wrote a letter questioning why Ward was fined.
"We want to be a team and he [Ward] wants to be a player who plays the game the way it's supposed to be played, the way our league wants it to be played," Tomlin said. "We respect that. But we need a little clarity in that situation."
Polamalu said that football's essence is being taken away with the NFL's heavy-handed penalties, saying football "just loses so much of its essence when it becomes like a pansy game."
Polamalu said that past NFL greats wouldn't be able to play the way that made them great in today's game.
"When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people," Polamalu told reporters. "Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."
However, Polamalu made it clear he doesn't defend players who take cheap shots.
"I didn't mean being cheap, but [those who] don't take anything from anybody," Polamalu said. "Know what I mean? Joe Greene wouldn't take anything from anybody. Joey Porter wouldn't. When people came to our field, they knew this was our home field. Nobody was going to mess with us. ... That's the type of attitude I think is really awesome." |

Telfair suspended for first three games following guilty plea
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Sebastian Telfair has been suspended three games for pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon.
Sebastian Telfair
Telfair
Tel fairwas sentenced last month to three years' probation. He was arrested in April 2007 when police found him carrying a loaded gun in his car while he was a member of the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics traded him to Minnesota in the deal for Kevin Garnett, and Telfair had a solid and incident-free first season in Minnesota. He signed a three-year, $7.5 million deal this summer to remain with the Timberwolves. He is the top backup to starter Randy Foye.
Telfair will miss home games against Sacramento and Dallas and a road game at Oklahoma City. His first game back will be Nov. 5 against San Antonio.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has a broken pinkie on his throwing hand and will be out four weeks, a team source told ESPN's Michael Smith.
Romo initially was diagnosed with a pinkie sprain in Sunday's 30-24 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
