The Trojans' resounding 35-3 victory against Ohio State on Saturday night made USC an overwhelming No. 1 in the media poll. USC received 61 first-place votes and 1,596 points on Sunday. The Trojans had 33 first-place votes last week.

Oklahoma moved past Georgia into No. 2. The Bulldogs barely got past South Carolina 14-7 on Saturday and the Sooners notched their third consecutive blowout victory, winning 55-14 at Washington.

Georgia is the first preseason No. 1 to drop that far after starting 3-0 since Oklahoma in 1985. The Sooners also fell to No. 3 after winning their first three games.

The Bulldogs received two first-place votes this week. No. 4 Florida received the other first-place vote and Missouri moved up a spot to No. 5.

Ohio State dropped eight spots to No. 13.

No. 6 was LSU, followed by Texas, Wisconsin, Alabama and Auburn. Half the top 10 teams are from the Southeastern Conference.

Two Pac-10 teams dropped out of the rankings after losing: California and Arizona State.

Clemson moved back into the rankings. The <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Tigers" class="ucommlink">Tigers</a> started the season ranked ninth and fell all the way out after losing their opener 34-10 to Alabama, and returned as No. 23.

Florida State also moved into the Top 25 for the first time since the middle of last season. The Seminoles were No. 24.

Texas Tech is No. 11, followed by South Florida, Ohio State, BYU and East Carolina, which slipped one spot to No. 15 after squeaking past Tulane 28-24 in its first game as a ranked team since 1999.

Penn State was No. 16 and Oregon was 17th, followed by Wake Forest, Kansas and Utah.

The final five were West Virginia, Illinois, Clemson, Florida State and Fresno State, which lost 13-10 to Wisconsin.

Best of Lou Holtz Pep Talks

#1 USC V. #5 OHIO ST. Seeking its first national championship in 28 years, Georgia is on top of The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the first time.

The Bulldogs received 22 first-place votes and 1,528 points from a panel of 65 media members in the poll released Saturday.

AP Preseason Poll
Top five teams in the AP preseason poll released Saturday:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

"To have people believing we have one of the best teams in the nation going into this thing, it's exciting for us," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said in a telephone interview with the AP.

"I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we certainly have put ourselves in position where at least the college football world thinks we're pretty good."

Ohio State, coming off a second consecutive loss in the national championship game but returning 20 starters, is No. 2. The Buckeyes received 21 first-place votes and 1,506 points.

No. 3 Southern California, which plays Ohio State in Los Angeles on Sept. 13, received 12 first-place votes. No. 4 Oklahoma had four first-place votes and No. 5 Florida received six first-place votes.

Georgia finished last season 11-2 and No. 2 in the country behind Southeastern Conference rival LSU. The <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Tigers" class="ucommlink">Tigers</a> won the national championship in the Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 7 by beating the Buckeyes.

But a week earlier on that same field the Bulldogs ended their season with a seventh straight victory and sent a message about 2008: "Look out!"

Rarely translates

Georgia faces long odds in its bid to win its first national championship since 1980. Only 10 AP preseason No. 1 teams have gone on to claim the national title:

• 2004-Southern Cal
• 1999-Florida State
• 1993-Florida State
• 1985-Oklahoma
• 1978-Alabama
• 1975-Oklahoma
• 1974-Oklahoma
• 1956-Oklahoma
• 1952-Michigan State
• 1951-Tennessee

Georgia toyed with high-scoring Hawaii and its Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Colt Brennan in a 41-10 rout, and one glance at the Bulldogs' depth chart, with all those freshmen and sophomores playing major roles, revealed the Bulldogs would be a force this season. The questions started even as Georgia celebrated its big victory on the confetti-covered turf.

Richt's job since then has been to keep his team from getting too wrapped up in the hype.

"I think it motivates the guys to prepare well, but the big thing is: If you think about a championship way back in January ... that can wear you down," Richt said. "It's our responsibility as coaches to help these guys break it down to one day at a time, one workout at a times, one practice at a time. Just prepare to be in position for the challenge.

"If we don't work, we'll have no chance."

No. 6 Missouri has its best preseason ranking. The <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Tigers" class="ucommlink">Tigers</a> ended last season No. 4, which was their best showing ever in the final poll.

LSU's <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Tigers" class="ucommlink">Tigers</a> will begin defense of their national championship ranked seventh. West Virginia is eighth, Clemson is ninth and No. 10 Auburn gives the SEC four top-10 teams to start the season.

With Florida and LSU taking the last two national titles, the SEC could become the first to conference to have three different teams win consecutive national titles.

Georgia certainly has the ingredients on the field to make that happen.

"We take it one step at a time. All we can do is focus on the smaller picture," receiver Mohamed Massaquoi said. "We can't let ourselves get overwhelmed. It takes away from playing hard and playing smart."

The Bulldogs return 16 starters, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, already being touted as a future first-round draft pick, and running back Knowshon Moreno, who became the first Georgia freshman to run for 1,000 yards since Herschel Walker did it while leading the Bulldogs to the national title in 1980.

We definitely have our work cut out for us.
-- Georgia coach Mark Richt
Stafford has been starting since his freshman season, and so far has been more of a caretaker quarterback than a star for the Bulldogs. He completed 56 percent of his passes last season for 2,523 yards and 19 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

The Bulldogs expect more from the 6-foot-3, 237-pound NFL prototype.

"I think he's ready to fly," Richt said. "He improved tremendously from his freshman year.

"We're all kind of growing together with Matt. This year we ought to see a better performance by him, not only because he's better but because the guys around have improved also."

Stafford will, however, be without his left tackle from last season. Trinton Sturdivant, who started every game as a freshman last season, injured his left knee in a preseason scrimmage and is done for the year.

On defense, the Bulldogs have a potential All-American in ev

Richt draws on experience to prepare Bulldogs

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia heard the expectations on the field at the Louisiana Superdome in the moments after its 41-10 rout of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs have lived with them ever since, every single day. Coach Mark Richt has listened to them at summer meetings of Bulldog Clubs across the state. The players have heard them on campus all spring and summer.

When you're 20 years old and everyone within a 60-mile radius of Sanford Stadium is telling you how great you're going to be, it would be tempting to assume that the actual playing of the games is a formality. It would be tempting to believe your coronation awaits.

Mark Richt's experience with expectations could pay dividends to Matt Stafford and the Bulldogs.

Richt has not had to deal with these expectations in his previous seven seasons at Georgia. In fact, the Bulldogs have not been ranked No. 1 in any Associated Press poll since 1982. But Richt spent his formative years as a coach at Florida State. He worked for Bobby Bowden for 13 of the 14 consecutive seasons (1987 to 2000) in which the Seminoles finished in the top five.

Richt grew up in coaching dealing with these expectations. That's how he came to tell his Bulldogs a story about the 1988 Florida State Seminoles. The previous season, Florida State had finished second in the nation to Miami, which had beaten the Seminoles 26-25. Florida State had nearly its entire team return for the 1988 season. The Seminoles spent eight months as the consensus No. 1. The players ate it up. They decided to create a dance video, which would save their greatness for posterity.

The Chicago <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Bears" class="ucommlink">Bears</a> had done just such a thing during the 1985 regular season en route to the Super Bowl. It didn't dawn on the Seminoles that the <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Bears" class="ucommlink">Bears</a> had danced after their 12-1 start. Florida State hadn't played a game yet.

2008 SEC Preview

The SEC has delivered the last two national champions. The reigning Heisman winner is from SEC country. What will the conference provide in 2008?

• Low: Uncertain QB landscape
• Low: Tebow still learning
• Maisel: UGA's great expectations
• Opportunity for South Carolina
• Skill threat: UT's Eric Berry
• Forde: Five SEC predictions
• SportsNation: Vote on SEC

Richt, sitting in his office the other day, relished the story the same way he did when he told it to his Georgia team this past spring.

"Florida State studied the Chicago <a href="http://www.freethefan.com/Bears" class="ucommlink">Bears</a>' rap, 'The Super Bowl Shuffle,'" Richt said. "While we were doing that, Miami was studying the 46 defense, Buddy Ryan's scheme that helped them win the Super Bowl. They had never run it before. They sprang it on us. We had no answer. We had very few answers."

The Seminoles played their archrival Hurricanes in the season opener as if they didn't know even the questions. Miami won 31-0. Richt called it "the hardest lesson that Florida State ever learned." After Richt told the Bulldogs the story, he showed them "The Seminole Rap."

"I was just trying to send the message that if you get too full of yourself, it could come tumbling down in a hurry," Richt said. "… I just told them that the preseason blessing could be a blessing or a curse. It will be a curse if you choose to use it as a sense of entitlement, like, 'I don't have to work anymore.' It will be a blessing if it excites you to begin to work like you never worked."

As the leaders of the team prepared for August practice, they said all the right things. They understand the lesson of "The Seminole Rap." They understand the 2007 season is the past tense. They know this is a different team.

"I'm going on my fourth season here," defensive tackle Jeff Owens said. "I have seen the ups and downs. I have experience at both winning and losing."

After throwing for 4,272 yards through two seasons, Matt Stafford is facing even higher expectations in 2008.

In 2006, the Bulldogs lost four of five games, then rallied to win their last three and finish 9-4. In 2007, after being routed at Tennessee 35-14, Georgia stood at only 2-2 in the SEC East. The Dawgs then won their final seven games, tied for the division championship and finished second in the AP rankings. Imaginations, at least those outside the locker room, took off from there.

"I'm just ready for it to get here," quarterback Matthew Stafford said, "so people will have something to talk about other than, 'What if?' When I go to campus, it's, 'Are y'all going to do it?'"

Stafford does sardonic well.

Jimmy Johns, the 10th Alabama football player arrested within the past year, is jailed in Tuscaloosa on $120,000 bond.

Johns, who was moved from running back to linebacker this spring, was arrested Tuesday morning in Tuscaloosa and charged with five felony counts of distributing cocaine.

A sixth charge of possession was also tacked on after police officers searched his off-campus residence and found cocaine and Ecstasy pills, according to Tuscaloosa Police Department Capt. Jeff Snyder, who heads up the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force.

It didn't take Alabama coach Nick Saban long to react; he dismissed Johns immediately.

"This type of behavior obviously will not be tolerated, and he is no longer a part of our program," Saban said in a statement.

Johns is the 10th Alabama football player arrested within the last year.

Snyder said police received information about two months ago that Johns was involved in the selling of drugs.

"Once we were able to get our investigation in place, we were able to buy from him five different times over the last week and a half and were then able to obtain a search warrant for his residence," Snyder said.

On two occasions police bought cocaine from Johns on the Alabama campus and, on one of the five times investigators bought cocaine from Johns, they bought as much as seven grams of the drug, according to police.

Johns is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $120,000 bond -- $20,000 for each charge.

Snyder said Johns was the only member of the Crimson Tide football program who was a part of the investigation.

"In fact, over the course of our investigation, he indicated that he tried his best not to let anyone else on the team know that he was selling," Snyder said. "As our investigation goes right now, nobody else in the football program is involved."

The Crimson Tide were already without linebacker Prince Hall this spring after Hall was suspended by Saban for disciplinary reasons. Saban said recently, however, that the door was open for Hall to rejoin the team if he met all of the coach's expectations.

Linebacker Ezekiel Knight also remains sidelined because of a heart ailment, and there's concern that he might not be able to play again.

Depending on what happens with Hall, sophomore Rolando McClain is the lone returning linebacker with extensive experience. McClain, a freshman All-America selection last season, manned one of the other two inside spots in the Tide's 3-4 defense this spring along with Johns.

The 6-foot-2, 233-pound Johns was No. 2 on the Tide in rushing in both of his first two years, but he saw reduced playing time last season after missing part of spring practice for academic reasons.

Former Marshall defensive standout killed in Florida crash

Another young life lost...R.I.P.
